Can't Sleep Love
ROLE: Research, Concept, Design, Illustration, Animation
TOOLS USED: After Effects
Project Brief
Pentatonix is an American a cappella group known for creating rich musical landscapes using only the human voice. Without instrumental support, every musical layer, including melody, harmony, rhythm, and bass, is performed vocally. This structure creates an intimacy that feels immediate and deeply human, allowing emotion to surface without mediation.
Released in 2015 as Pentatonix’s first original single, Can’t Sleep Love serves as the foundation for this motion design project. The animation is driven by lyric-based kinetic typography, where text becomes the primary visual performer. Rather than illustrating the song literally, typographic motion translates vocal rhythm and emotional progression into visual form.
Concept
Keywords: overprint, analog process, tactility, handcrafted, print texture, material-driven motion
The visual language is inspired by traditional printmaking techniques. Five distinct typographic colors represent the five vocalists, referencing multi-layer printing processes where individual plates combine to form a unified image. Overlapping type layers visualize how separate vocal tracks merge into harmony.
Textural imperfections and tactile motion evoke a handcrafted quality, reinforcing the human nature of a cappella performance. Through carefully timed lyric reveals and disappearances synchronized with the music, typography becomes rhythmic and performative, enhancing the audience’s emotional engagement with the song.
